Prof. Ogata has won the the International Award of the European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology

During the International Meeting of Pediatric Endocrinology held in Washington D.C., USA, from 14th September to 17th September 2017 (the meeting is held once in 4 years), Prof. Tsutomu Ogata won the the International Award of the European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology for his significant contribution, on a global scale, to advances in pediatric endocrinology.
He is the first non-English-speaking winner of the award. He is also the first researcher to have received this award while working as an active professor.
Two major international activities were cited as the reason why the award was given to Prof. Ogata.
First, his contribution in the field of medicine was cited. To date, Prof. Ogata has published 380 English-language papers, including 5 reports published in Nature Genetics. His representative discovery pertained to his identifying SHOX (the gene responsible for short stature and skeletal system disease), detection of MAMLD1 (a gene responsible for disorders of sex differentiation) and establishing the entity of Kagami-Ogata syndrome (a new human imprinting disease). These research outcomes of his have contributed greatly not only to advances in pediatric endocrinology, but also advances in the field of pediatrics in general.
Second, his social contribution was cited. He has been stimulating international communication and exchange, while serving as President of the Japanese Society for Pediatric Endocrinology since 2014 and as President of the Japan Society of Reproductive Endocrinology since 2016. For example, he made the plenary presentation at the First Exchange Conference of the European and Japanese Societies of Pediatric Endocrinology and a presentation at the International Joint Endocrinology School and served as the Program Committee Chairman for the International Meeting of Pediatric Endocrinology. These contributions were highly appraised, leading to the award mentioned above.
