FD Lecture Held

Feb 25, 2026

On Monday, February 16, we welcomed Professor Susan H. McDaniel from the University of Rochester, USA, as a guest lecturer for an FD lecture titled "A Biopsychosocial, Systemic Approach to Physician-Patient Communication: Our Research and Physician Communication Coaching Program." A total of 30 faculty, staff, and students participated on site.
Professor McDaniel is a family psychologist and Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Family Medicine at UR Medicine, University of Rochester Medical Center, and she develops and oversees physician communication coaching programs.
In the lecture, she introduced the pilot study on doctor-patient communication revealed key issues such as a lack of empathy, and how they have responded by introducing a coaching program centered on the ICU (self-introduction, eliciting concerns from patients and their families, and confirming patient understanding), which has resulted in improved patient satisfaction. This was a valuable opportunity to reaffirm the importance of communication in medical care.
