A Journey from China to Japan: Life at Hamamatsu University School of Medicine

My name is Liu Jie. I come from China.

The day I came to Hamamatsu in October 2018 remains as vivid in my memory as if it were yesterday. The quiet streets, clean roads, and cotton-candy-like white clouds floating in the blue sky--everything felt fresh and somehow warm to me. Although my Japanese was still poor, I didn't feel particularly anxious because I could understand the kanji (one type of Japanese character).

From clinician to virologist--this transition was by no means easy. My days spent dealing with patients and medications at the hospital have given way to a new role: exploring more fundamental biological phenomena, such as DNA/RNA extraction and synthesis, and the reactions triggered when viruses infect cells or animals. At first, I felt confused and anxious, but the faculty at Hamamatsu University School of Medicine patiently guided me from the basics. Thanks to them, the door to virus research slowly began to open.

Research often didn't go as planned, and I faced many difficulties, but the joy of overcoming those challenges together with my professors and colleagues remains an unforgettable memory to this day. Looking back, I realize that it was precisely those difficulties that provided me with invaluable experiences that helped me grow.

中国から日本へ： 浜松医科大学での留学生活

私の名前は劉 傑（LIU JIE）と申します。中国から参りました。

2018年10月に浜松へ来た日のことは、今でも昨日のことのように鮮明に思い出されます。静かな街並み、清潔な道路、そして青空に浮かぶ綿菓子のような白い雲──すべてが私にとって新鮮で、どこか温かさを感じるものでした。日本語はまだ拙かったものの、漢字が理解できたおかげで、大きな不安は感じませんでした。

臨床医からウイルス学の研究者へ──この転身は決して容易なものではありませんでした。病院では患者と薬を相手にしていた日々から一転し、今ではDNA/RNAの抽出や合成、そしてウイルスが細胞や動物に感染した際に引き起こす反応など、より根本的な生命現象を探る立場へと変わりました。最初は戸惑いや不安もありましたが、浜松医科大学の先生方が基礎から丁寧に指導してくださり、そのおかげでウイルス研究の扉がゆっくりと開かれていきました。

研究が思うように進まず、苦悩することも多くありましたが、先生方や仲間たちと共に困難を乗り越えた瞬間の喜びは、今でも忘れられません。振り返ってみれば、まさにその困難こそが、私自身を成長させてくれた貴重な経験だったのだと実感しています。

Since Graduation until Now

• After graduation, I was honored to be appointed as a Postdoctoral Researcher by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) and have continued my research at the Department of Virology II, National Institute of Infectious Diseases. Here, I met many outstanding researchers and was deeply impressed by their research achievements. At the same time, I developed a strong desire to contribute to society as an independent researcher myself.

  I have now returned to Hamamatsu University School of Medicine as a visiting research fellow and am conducting collaborative research. Though it hasn't been that long since I left, standing once again on the campus of my alma mater and reuniting with my former professors brings a deep emotion welling up in my heart all over again.

  The experience I gained at Hamamatsu University School of Medicine is an invaluable asset to me. Furthermore, the inherent qualities of Japan's research environment--its freedom, meticulousness, and strong teamwork--have sustained me as a researcher to this day. I intend to continue walking the path of research step by step, steadily and humbly.

卒業してから現在まで

卒業後は、大変光栄なことに日本医療研究開発機構（AMED）の「ポストドクトラル若手研究者」として採用され、国立感染症研究所・ウイルス第二部にて研究を続けています。ここでは、多くの優秀な研究者たちと出会い、その研究成果に深い感銘を受けました。同時に、自分自身もいつか独立した研究者として社会に貢献できるよう、強く志を抱くようになりました。

現在は、浜松医科大学に「訪問共同研究員」として戻る機会をいただき、共同研究を行っております。久しぶりというほどの時間は経っていないものの、再び母校のキャンパスに立ち、先生方と再会できたことに、あらためて感慨深い気持ちを覚えます。

浜松医科大学で得た経験は、私にとってかけがえのない財産です。そして、日本の研究環境が持つ「自由さ」「丁寧さ」「チームワークの強さ」は、研究者としての私を今も支え続けてくれています。これからも、謙虚な姿勢を忘れずに、一歩一歩着実に、自分の研究の道を歩んでいきたいと思います。

最後に、これまでご指導いただいたすべての先生方、そして共に歩んできた仲間たちに心より感謝申し上げます。今後もご指導・ご鞭撻のほど、何卒よろしくお願い申し上げます。
