"My first impression when I came to Japan"

6 months have passed since I came to Hamamatsu University School of Medicine after one year delay due to the COVID pandemic... mixed with joy and anxiety. The anxiety in my mind, a 30-year-old girl, bringing dreams from Vietnam to Japan, surprised by so many new things (people, culture, language, food...). Of course, it makes me can't sleep for the flight to Japan. But then, smashing al l the anxiety... with great joy, an intensive learning and research environment, and a land of many friendly and honest people, I began to integrate more from a friendly smile from my instructor Prof. Matsuyama, kind help from the International Office, the warm feelings from the international student dormitory where the Vietnamese friends already shared, encouraging each other to overcome the loneliness from living away from family, pressures of research work ... The friendliness of the Japanese teachers makes me more confident and continue to pursue my research on spinal cord injuries.

"What I do to achieve my goal"

SCI is a neurological disease that causes motor, sensory, and autonomic dysfunction. It has high mortality and morbidity worldwide. However, the studies related to the lymphatic system are limited due to the difficulty in observing colorless lymphatic vessels, especially the spinal cord. With the discovery of lymphatic - specific markers, researchers have been able to develop several lymphatic and blood vessel-specific, promoter -driven, fluorescent-reporter transgenic mice for visualization of lymphatics in vivo and in vitro. Therefore, to visualize lymphatic development in the context of angiogenesis, dual fluorescent-transgenic reporters, like Flt4-Venus/Flt1-dsRed mice, have been bred to characterize lymphatic and blood vessels simultaneously. I hope that with the help of Prof. Satoru Yamagishi and the professional working environment of the Organ & Tissue Anatomy Department, I can gradually open the door to rehabilitation for SCI patients. Great gratitude comes to the Senpai from Viet Nam who introduced me to HUSM, to study, work, meet and interact with friends from all over the world (USA, Japan, Canada, India, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Rwanda, ...) I hope that the next 3 years will be a journey for me to gradually discover myself, overcome language barriers to gradually improve, and set step by step to my dream.

新型コロナウイルス感染症流行の影響で、入学から１年遅れて、喜びと不安を抱えて浜松医科大学にやってきてから半年が経ちました。心に不安を抱いた30歳の女の子は、ベトナムから日本へ夢を運んできて、たくさんの新しいもの（人、文化、言葉、食べ物...）に驚き、もちろん日本へのフライトは眠れないほどでした。でも、大きな喜びと、集中できる学習・研究環境、そしてフレンドリーで誠実な人々がたくさんいる土地・浜松で、そんな不安は吹き飛んでしまいました。指導教員である松山先生の優しい笑顔、国際化推進室の親切なサポート、ベトナムの友人たちが既に共同生活をしている留学生寮の温かい雰囲気、ホームシックや研究活動のプレッシャーを乗り越えるため友人たちと互いに励まし合い...、このような環境のおかげで、私は日本の生活に更に溶け込めるようになっていきました。日本の先生方の親しみやすさが、私に自信を持たせ、脊髄損傷の研究を続けさせてくれます。

脊髄損傷は、運動機能、感覚機能、自律神経機能に障害をもたらす神経疾患で、世界的にも死亡率や罹患率が高い病気です。しかし、特に脊髄では、透明であるリンパ管の観察が困難なため、リンパ系に関連する研究は限られています。リンパ管特定マーカーの発見により、研究者は、in vivo（体内）およびin vitro（体外）でのリンパ管の可視化のために用いる、いくつかのリンパ管および血管特異的、プロモーター駆動型、蛍光レポーター遺伝子導入マウスを開発することができました。そこで、血管形成におけるリンパ脈管の発生を可視化するために、Flt4-Venus/Flt1-dsRedマウスのような二重蛍光遺伝子導入レポーターを用いたマウスが飼育され、リンパ管と血管を同時に特徴付けることができるようになりました。器官組織解剖学講座の山岸先生と、研究室のプロフェッショナルな環境の元、脊髄損傷患者のリハビリテーションへの扉を少しずつ開いていければと思います。

　アメリカ、日本、カナダ、インド、中国、バングラデシュ、パキスタン、ルワンダ...、世界各国の友人たちと一緒に学び、働き、出会い、交流するために、私を浜松医科大学に紹介してくれたベトナムの先輩に大きな感謝の気持ちを捧げます。これからの3年間が、私にとって、新たな自分の発見や、言葉の壁を乗り越えて夢に向かって一歩一歩前進していける道のりになると期待しています。浜松医科大学の皆さん、本当にありがとうございます！
